Which States Mandate CPR Training in Schools?

When it comes to CPR, there are three known facts. First, when CPR is performed immediately after cardiac arrest, it doubles or even triples the chances of survival. Second, that occurs in less than 10 percent of cardiac arrests that occur outside of a hospital setting. Third, CPR training increases the likelihood that a bystander will be ready and able to perform CPR when the need arises. This lifesaving opportunity is the driving force behind the American Heart Association’s CPR in Schools program.

What is CPR in Schools?

CPR in Schools is an initiative from the American Heart Association to train students in CPR, AED use, and choking relief. The training is specifically aimed at young learners, and was designed to be completed in just one class period. It comes with a toolkit that can train 10 to 20 students at once. Training can be repurposed for different classes and grade levels.

Does Your State Mandate CPR Training in School?

About 10 years ago, there was a significant effort to mandate CPR training as part of high school graduation requirements. Today, the majority of states have enacted laws requiring CPR education in schools.

In HeartCert’s home state of Minnesota, for example, students must take part in CPR training in order to graduate from high school. School districts are required to provide a onetime CPR and AED training to students at some point between grades 7 and 12.

Schools are not required to use the AHA’s CPR in Schools materials. They can set up training from a local provider such as HeartCert. Learn more about our on-site CPR/AED training options here.

HeartCert CPR is your trusted training partner for CPR. We also train in ACLS, PALS, EMR, First Aid, CNA, IV, EKG and more, in Minnesota and throughout the United States.

HeartCert CPR courses include CPR/AED/First Aid, Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Certified Nursing Assistant training, IV training, EKG training, babysitter basics and more. Courses and certifications from both the American Heart Association and American Red Cross are available.

We are now offering virtual CPR courses and certifications. We also offer safe in-person courses at all HeartCert locations throughout the United States, including our headquarters, HeartCert CPR Eagan.

Introducing a Private CPR Training Option

HeartCert is excited to introduce a new, one-of-a-kind CPR training option. Our private CPR course allows you to choose a time that works for your schedule. CPR certification has never been easier!

Why We Launched Our Private CPR Course

There’s no question that CPR saves lives. According to the American Heart Association, more than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of a hospital setting every year. Only about 10% of people who experience cardiac arrest in a non-medical setting survive. But if CPR is performed immediately, the chances of survival double or even triple.

Read: What’s the Difference Between Heart Attack and Cardiac Arrest?

Unfortunately, bystander CPR is performed on fewer than half of all out-of-hospital cardiac arrests. By offering CPR training courses that are easy and accessible, we’re hoping to change that number.

How Does Private CPR Training Work?

When you enroll for our private CPR certification course, you’ll be able to choose a time that works for your schedule. You’ll receive immediate access to online training materials and videos. When you’ve completed the coursework, you’ll have access to our Eagan, MN headquarters at your scheduled time.

Then, an instructor will connect with you virtually to take you through the final steps of the CPR certification process. You will receive an American Red Cross CPR certification, which is valid for two years.

See how it works:

We’re offering two options for private CPR training: Basic Life Support (BLS) and Adult/Child/Infant CPR/AED with First Aid.

Learn more and register here, and contact us with any questions.

HeartCert CPR is your trusted training partner for CPR, ACLS, PALS, EMR, First Aid, CNA, IV and more, in Minnesota and throughout the United States.

HeartCert CPR courses include CPR/AED/First Aid, Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Certified Nursing Assistant training, IV training, babysitter training and more. Courses and certifications from both the American Heart Association and American Red Cross are available.

We are now offering virtual CPR courses and certifications, as well as safe in-person courses at all locations and our headquarters, HeartCert CPR Eagan.

HeartCert Featured on Mission Matters Podcast

HeartCert Founder and CEO Tim Smith was recently interviewed on the Mission Matters podcast, discussing the origin of HeartCert and his passion for helping others – and teaching them to help others.

trained firefighter course and the HeartCert mission

The History of HeartCert

On the podcast, Tim recounts his personal journey, in which he went from a personal care attendant, to an EMT and firefighter, to a CPR instructor, and ultimately, to creating HeartCert. Tim’s career path helped him realize the lack of basic and advanced safety training that was available and accessible to the public. Because CPR is so vital to survival after cardiac arrest, the need was great – and the potential impact even bigger.

Register for a CPR Course

Since HeartCert was formed in 2010, the business has grown and changed to meet new challenges. During the COVID-19 pandemic, HeartCert quickly pivoted to offer online training modules and send CPR equipment by mail. This helped fill the growing need for healthcare providers and childcare workers.

Now, HeartCert operates training centers in four states, and offers virtual CPR training nationwide. HeartCert also operates its own online CPR supplies store and recently launched a virtual teaching assistant to help other instructors manage their operations.

The HeartCert Mission

Ultimately, there’s a simple mission behind HeartCert: helping people.

“I wanted to do something that I’m passionate about and that contributed to making the world a better place,” Tim said. “HeartCert offers quality, affordable and accessible life-saving training which prepares more individuals to act in case of an emergency. We’re building a base to teach people how to help others and better communities.”

Learn CPR Without Leaving Home

Although stay-home orders are slowly being relaxed in Minnesota, many people remain reluctant to leave home for anything non-essential. The good news is that many businesses have adapted to this new normal, offering curbside pickup, online ordering, telehealth appointments and more.

In order to continue providing CPR training to medical professionals, essential workers and laypeople who wish to become CPR certified, HeartCert CPR is now offering virtual CPR classes that can be fully completed at home.

In our virtual CPR courses, students watch interactive training videos and complete written tests online, from home. We send a CPR manikin and supplies in the mail. Then, we schedule a virtual skill session with one of our instructors.

Watch this short video for instructions on how to assemble your manikin at home.

Once you’ve completed all portions of the virtual training, you’ll receive a two-year American Red Cross certification card. (If you need an American Heart Association certification, please contact us.)

We are also still holding in-person CPR training courses. We have taken all necessary safety measures, including disinfecting and social distancing. Take a look at our course schedule.

Could Drone-Delivered AEDs Save Lives?

Every year in the U.S., more than 350,000 people have a cardiac arrest outside of a hospital setting. Only about 10 percent of those people survive. When bystanders step in to perform CPR, the likelihood of survival increases significantly. And when AEDs are available, the odds are even better.

But while AEDs are increasingly accessible in public places, they are not available where the highest number of cardiac arrests occur: in private homes. Emergency responders can be quickly dispatched with an AED, but in cardiac arrest, every minute counts.

Testing Drone-Delivered AEDs

drone-delivered AEDs

To meet patient needs more quickly, researchers are testing AEDs delivered by unmanned drones – and initial research is promising. According to the American Heart Association, in a test between drones and emergency responders, the drone was able to deliver an AED much more quickly. In some cases, the drone beat the EMR team by up to 8 minutes!

Additional Research Needed

Of course, it will take some time before drone-delivered AEDs become a reality. Researchers are working on logistics, including how to help bystanders receive and interact with the AED. But some believe drone-delivered AEDs could be implemented in just one year!

If drone-delivered AEDs become reality in Minnesota, it could be a huge step in saving lives. However, researchers emphasize that human intervention – bystanders stepping in to perform CPR – will still be an essential part of the process. A bystander will always be needed to recognize when someone is in distress, call for help, perform CPR, and then apply an AED – no matter how that AED arrives.

Will you be that bystander? Register for a CPR class today.

Did you know Good Samaritan laws protect bystanders who perform CPR?

In an earlier blog post, we discussed some of the common reasons that bystanders don’t perform CPR when they encounter someone in cardiac arrest. The reasons given include fear of causing additional harm and of touching a person inappropriately. Another common reason is the fear of legal action should something go wrong.

legal

According to new research, that fear isn’t really justified. There are very few lawsuits ever filed in connection with performing CPR. In fact, the failure to perform CPR has led to significantly more legal action.

Good Samaritan Laws Protect Bystanders

Every state in the U.S., including Minnesota, has some form of a “Good Samaritan” law. These laws offer legal protection to people who provide reasonable assistance if they believe someone is injured or in danger. This is one of the primary reasons that people who perform bystander CPR are not very likely to be brought to court, and if they are, that they will be protected. Everyone should call 9-1-1 and give help to the best of their ability.

Ultimately, the best way to avoid any apprehension or fear over performing bystander CPR is to take a CPR training course! All of these barriers to act are comprehensively covered to help you feel prepared in case of an emergency. Sign up today and be ready if and when the need arises.

Why Don’t Bystanders Perform CPR?

In the United States, more than 325,000 people go into cardiac arrest outside of a medical setting every year. When those people receive CPR immediately, their odds of survival are more than doubled. The likelihood that they won’t suffer brain damage or other lasting harm increases significantly as well. So why don’t more bystanders perform CPR on people who are in need?

Bystanders Fear Causing Additional Injury

bystanders perform CPR

In a new study, researchers asked 677 people about barriers to performing bystander CPR. The primary reason for inaction was a concern about causing additional injury to a patient, especially if that patient was elderly, female or adolescent. The second most common reason was a lack of CPR training and ability.

Register For a CPR Class Today

An additional reason given was fear of exposing a patient or being perceived as touching a patient inappropriately. Overall, women are 27 percent less likely than men to receive CPR from a bystander.

Of the 677 people surveyed, fewer than 65 percent of respondents said that they would be “extremely likely” or “moderately likely” to perform CPR. It is clear, from these results, that additional CPR education and training is key to ensuring that more bystanders perform CPR.

HeartCert CPR to Offer Red Cross CPR Classes

HeartCert CPR is proud to announce that it will now offer American Red Cross CPR certification courses, in addition to current American Heart Association offerings, at all of its locations. These new courses will allow HeartCert to reach an even broader audience, and work with another highly reputable organization to train more people in the life-saving skills of CPR.

Red Cross

The American Red Cross uses the latest science and preferred techniques to create engaging, informative courses. These courses offer increased flexibility and class options, including review courses and challenge (or test-out) courses for experienced providers.

In addition, this Red Cross partnership will allow HeartCert to offer an increased number of blended course options. Blended courses reduce in-classroom time by having participants do some online coursework before class. This leads to shorter and more convenient class options for both community and on-site certification courses. Certification card processes will also be faster and easier for participants to receive certifications after the course.

American Red Cross courses, like American Heart Association classes, are nationally accredited. Certifications are accepted – and often preferred – by most employers. The Red Cross was recently approved and accepted to offer Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) training equivalent to that of the American Heart Association for those needing advanced certification courses.

These new CPR course options will be offered in addition to our existing American Heart Association certification courses. HeartCert will soon be adding additional class options for all course types.

HeartCert is proud to work with both of these highly reputable organizations to train and educate students on CPR, AED, BLS, ACLS, PALS and other life-saving skills throughout Minneapolis, St. Paul and the surrounding areas. By offering Red Cross certification courses, HeartCert is able to maintain our competitive pricing while providing more options to our students.

Notice: American Heart Association Course Completion Card Price Increase

instructor teaching cpr

The American Heart Association informed us that beginning October 2017, the retail price of all AHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED, CPR AED, First Aid and Pediatric First Aid CPR AED student course completion cards/eCards will be increased. This will affect anyone taking a

Heartsaver (lay responder) course after October 2017. This change will occur nation-wide and impact every American Heart Association Heartsaver course. The course curriculum will remain the same, and will continue to adhere to the 2015 AHA Guidelines Update for CPR and ECC.

While cards/eCards will have an increase in cost, the suggested retail price of all related online courses will be reduced. According to the AHA, the shift is designed to make the student workbooks more accessible as a valuable reference tool before, during, and after training as required by the AHA Program Administration Manual.

You will not need to take any extra steps when signing up for classes. We wanted to inform you of this change so you will be aware of the cost when signing up for classes. If you have any questions about this change or need help planning your courses, please contact us.

Even at the increased cost, AHA classes are the best value for your dollar. We offer superior customer service, the most offerings and locations of all AHA providers in the state, certification expiration tracking and have an outstanding BBB accredited A+ rated team of instructors. We’ll continue to provide you excellent classes at competitive prices.
