CPR Certification

5 Reasons Why Everyone Should Know CPR

man clutching chest - why everyone should know cprWould you know what to do if a loved one collapsed suddenly in front of you? Cardiovascular diseases are the most common cause of death in the world. CPR can be the difference between life and death. You can’t assume that someone else will step in – that’s why it’s so important to learn CPR. Getting certified is easier than you think. Reserve your spot now!

1. CPR Saves Lives

Over 300,000 individuals experience cardiac arrests annually in the United States. Sudden cardiac arrest disrupts the heart’s electrical rhythm, leading to a failure in effective blood pumping. This can lead to a person suddenly collapsing, losing consciousness, and stopping breathing. Prompt CPR can substantially boost survival rates by maintaining blood circulation until advanced medical assistance arrives, increasing the chances of survival by more than double when initiated early.

View CPR Classes

2. CPR is Not Performed Enough

Would you be surprised to learn that bystander CPR is done in less than half of all out-of-hospital cardiac arrests? National statistics have shown that only 15 to 30 percent of people who experience sudden cardiac arrests outside of hospitals receive bystander CPR.

When people are asked why they would not give CPR, a very common answer is that they never received training. Other concerns include fear of harming the individual in need of lifesaving support, legal risks, or concerns about infection. These concerns often diminish once people learn proper CPR techniques, and CPR-trained individuals find themselves empowered to help others in the event of a medical emergency.

3. You Don’t Have to Do Mouth-to-Mouth Resuscitation

Another reason people report they do not perform CPR is because of concerns about performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. In 2010, the guidelines for performing CPR changed, and they now say that those who do not feel comfortable or who have not received formal training, should attempt hands-only CPR. We advocate performing chest compressions even without breathing assistance. Hands-only CPR has been proven to be just as effective for many adults who experience sudden cardiac arrest.

4. Hands-Only CPR is Easy to Learn

Here are the basic steps to perform hands-only CPR:

  1. Place the heel of your hand on the center of the victim’s chest.
  2. Place your other hand on top of the first, interlacing your fingers.
  3. Press down on the chest about two inches and release.

You want to repeat this quickly, at least 100 times a minute. And don’t stop doing CPR until emergency services arrive at the scene – recent studies have found that people may have a better chance of surviving with normal brain function when CPR is continued up to 38 minutes or even longer.

With the advancement in technology, learning CPR has never been easier. HeartCert offers in-person, online, private kiosk, and group CPR courses that are accessible and convenient based on your schedule and learning style. The goal is to find the learning technique that works best for you so that you are comfortable if you are ever in a situation where you can save a life!

5. Most Cardiac Arrests Occur in the Home

More than 85 percent of cardiac arrests take place at home. As a result, individuals frequently report having their lives saved because of CPR performed by a husband, wife, child, or friend. In fact, there has been a big push, led by the American Heart Association, to bring CPR training to schools, which can save even more lives. So take the challenge. If you don’t know CPR, learn CPR and gain the confidence in knowing that if you are ever needed, you too can save a life!

Don’t wait until it’s too late – register to learn CPR today.

Are BLS and Heartsaver CPR Courses the Same?

If you’re considering a CPR training course, whether you’re required to by an employer or simply want to learn how to save a life, you may be confused by the options available to you. What’s the difference between BLS and ACLS? What is PALS? What about Heartsaver?

One of the most common questions we get is in regard to BLS and Heartsaver courses and how they differ. We’ll answer that question here today.

BLS vs. Heartsaver: What’s the Difference?

BLS vs Heartsaver CPR training course

What is BLS?

BLS stands for Basic Life Support. In this class, participants learn one and two person CPR skills for adults, children and infants. You will also learn how to clear the airway of a conscious or unconscious person, and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

Another focus of BLS courses is recognizing the signs and symptoms of cardiac arrest and respiratory distress, and how to respond to emergencies and life-threatening symptoms. Because BLS courses are geared toward health care providers and emergency responders, it is expected that participants will, at some point, be called upon to use these skills in an emergency situation.

Find a HeartCert Location Near You

What is Heartsaver?

In comparison, the Heartsaver course is geared toward those who don’t work in a healthcare setting but may be called upon to perform CPR, or who are required to be trained and certified in CPR as a condition of employment. This can include teachers, childcare providers, coaches, parents or caregivers, or anyone who wants to learn CPR.

Heartsaver course participants learn the same basic CPR and first aid skills that are taught in BLS courses, without some of the more advanced techniques included in BLS coursework. You will leave a Heartsaver class knowing how to perform CPR, administer an AED, and do basic first aid. It is a valuable course for anyone, regardless of their employment setting!

Introducing a Private CPR Training Option

HeartCert is excited to introduce a new, one-of-a-kind CPR training option. Our private CPR course allows you to choose a time that works for your schedule. CPR certification has never been easier!

Why We Launched Our Private CPR Course

There’s no question that CPR saves lives. According to the American Heart Association, more than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of a hospital setting every year. Only about 10% of people who experience cardiac arrest in a non-medical setting survive. But if CPR is performed immediately, the chances of survival double or even triple.

Read: What’s the Difference Between Heart Attack and Cardiac Arrest?

Unfortunately, bystander CPR is performed on fewer than half of all out-of-hospital cardiac arrests. By offering CPR training courses that are easy and accessible, we’re hoping to change that number.

How Does Private CPR Training Work?

When you enroll for our private CPR certification course, you’ll be able to choose a time that works for your schedule. You’ll receive immediate access to online training materials and videos. When you’ve completed the coursework, you’ll have access to our Eagan, MN headquarters at your scheduled time.

Then, an instructor will connect with you virtually to take you through the final steps of the CPR certification process. You will receive an American Red Cross CPR certification, which is valid for two years.

See how it works:

We’re offering two options for private CPR training: Basic Life Support (BLS) and Adult/Child/Infant CPR/AED with First Aid.

Learn more and register here, and contact us with any questions.

HeartCert CPR is your trusted training partner for CPR, ACLS, PALS, EMR, First Aid, CNA, IV and more, in Minnesota and throughout the United States.

HeartCert CPR courses include CPR/AED/First Aid, Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Certified Nursing Assistant training, IV training, babysitter training and more. Courses and certifications from both the American Heart Association and American Red Cross are available.

HeartCert Featured on Mission Matters Podcast

HeartCert Founder and CEO Tim Smith was recently interviewed on the Mission Matters podcast, discussing the origin of HeartCert and his passion for helping others – and teaching them to help others.

trained firefighter course and the HeartCert mission

The History of HeartCert

On the podcast, Tim recounts his personal journey, in which he went from a personal care attendant, to an EMT and firefighter, to a CPR instructor, and ultimately, to creating HeartCert. Tim’s career path helped him realize the lack of basic and advanced safety training that was available and accessible to the public. Because CPR is so vital to survival after cardiac arrest, the need was great – and the potential impact even bigger.

Register for a CPR Course

Since HeartCert was formed in 2010, the business has grown and changed to meet new challenges. During the COVID-19 pandemic, HeartCert quickly pivoted to offer online training modules and send CPR equipment by mail. This helped fill the growing need for healthcare providers and childcare workers.

Now, HeartCert operates training centers in four states, and offers virtual CPR training nationwide. HeartCert also operates its own online CPR supplies store and recently launched a virtual teaching assistant to help other instructors manage their operations.

The HeartCert Mission

Ultimately, there’s a simple mission behind HeartCert: helping people.

“I wanted to do something that I’m passionate about and that contributed to making the world a better place,” Tim said. “HeartCert offers quality, affordable and accessible life-saving training which prepares more individuals to act in case of an emergency. We’re building a base to teach people how to help others and better communities.”

AHA Updates Instructor Certification Card Extensions

As we reach the six-month mark of the COVID-19 pandemic, the American Heart Association (AHA) has issued new information on its CPR training provider and instructor certification cards.

certification

Initially, the deadline for instructor card renewals was extended by 60 days in areas with widespread COVID-19 spread. (We go into those details more extensively on an earlier blog post.) Now, the AHA is giving cardholders a 120-day extension. The due dates are based on the “renew by” dates listed on existing certification cards.

Exception For Areas Still Under Distancing Restrictions

There is one exception. Cardholders and training centers with cards expiring at the end of July may have until the end of October 2020 to renew their certification, if they are in areas that are still under lockdowns and restrictions.

Normal Renewal Timelines Apply

For those with cards that expired at the end of last month and going forward, the AHA states that renewals must take place by the recommended renewal dates.

Follow Local Instructions and Use Discretion

The AHA offers some flexibility, reminding training centers to follow local mandates and recommendations, and to use their discretion in ensuring the safest environment for CPR students.

If you are running out of time to renew your AHA instructor card, HeartCert is here to help. We’re offering CPR instructor courses at our Twin Cities location, and are taking every necessary precaution to keep our students safe. Contact us with any questions.

Learn CPR Without Leaving Home

Although stay-home orders are slowly being relaxed in Minnesota, many people remain reluctant to leave home for anything non-essential. The good news is that many businesses have adapted to this new normal, offering curbside pickup, online ordering, telehealth appointments and more.

In order to continue providing CPR training to medical professionals, essential workers and laypeople who wish to become CPR certified, HeartCert CPR is now offering virtual CPR classes that can be fully completed at home.

In our virtual CPR courses, students watch interactive training videos and complete written tests online, from home. We send a CPR manikin and supplies in the mail. Then, we schedule a virtual skill session with one of our instructors.

Watch this short video for instructions on how to assemble your manikin at home.

Once you’ve completed all portions of the virtual training, you’ll receive a two-year American Red Cross certification card. (If you need an American Heart Association certification, please contact us.)

We are also still holding in-person CPR training courses. We have taken all necessary safety measures, including disinfecting and social distancing. Take a look at our course schedule.

HeartCert CPR to Offer Virtual CPR Training Options

At HeartCert CPR, the health and safety of our students is our top priority. During these unprecedented times, we’ve taken extra precautions to ensure that our in-person courses remain safe, while also offering expanded virtual CPR course offerings.

As we all know, healthcare workers are providing an essential service during the COVID-19 crisis. In addition, many organizations are seeking additional healthcare staff, with CPR certification required for employment. HeartCert remains ready and able to provide CPR education and instruction for all essential workers.

Continue reading for an overview of our virtual CPR course options, as well as the precautions we’re taking to keep our students and instructors safe.

Precautionary Measures

For our in-person CPR courses, we’ve limited class enrollment to nine people. All students will be placed at least six feet apart, with no sharing of manikins or supplies. We’ve also implemented extra sanitation measures. We are asking students to stay home if they are ill, have been exposed, or have recently traveled.

Blended Learning

HeartCert CPR offers online/in-person blended learning options. In these courses, participants watch and complete interactive training videos and written tests. Then, come in for a short in-person skills course (following all precautionary measures listed above) to become certified.

Provisional Certification

After completing the online portion of a blended learning course, receive a provisional certificate that will be valid for 90 days. Within that 90-day period, simply attend a one-hour skill session, and the certificate will be converted to an official two-year CPR certification.

Distance Learning – Coming Soon!

In these virtual CPR courses, participants will be sent a manikin and equipment. After completing the online training and testing, an instructor will virtually test your skills via videoconferencing. Watch our Facebook page for more information on these new CPR certification course options!
