What Kind of Work Does a CNA Do?

A Certified Nursing Assistant or a CNA is primarily responsible for providing basic patient care. This basic care may include assisting patients with bathing, eating, using the restroom, or simply walking. Their healthcare involvement may consist of taking vital signs, assisting with medical procedures and more. With their versatility and wide-ranging tasks, Certified Nursing Assistants have become highly sought-after healthcare professionals, proving to be invaluable team members in the healthcare industry. What does a CNA do?

Basic Patient Care

One of the main responsibilities of a CNA is providing patients with basic care. This can be basic everyday functions such as eating, dressing and grooming. In short, they help patients maintain personal hygiene and comfort.

Why Should I Become a CNA?

Vital Signs Monitoring

Another duty of a CNA includes monitoring vital signs. CNAs are trained to measure and document vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature and respiratory rate. Regularly monitoring these vital signs is crucial for healthcare professionals when assessing a patient’s overall health.

Medication Support

A CNA will help with administering medications under the guidance and supervision of a licensed healthcare professional or registered nurse. CNAs will ensure that patients are administered the correct medications at the appropriate times.

Learn More: Trained Medication Administration (TMA) Course

Procedure Assistance

Certified nursing assistants may assist nurses and medical staff with medical procedures. This could include tending to wounds, assisting patients by transferring them from various areas within their room, specimen collection and more.

Observation

CNAs are responsible for carefully observing patients and promptly reporting on changes in their condition. This is an essential function as it can help healthcare professionals detect and address any potential health issues.

These are just some of the meaningful contributions that Certified Nursing Assistants make in caring for patients. With an extensive range of responsibilities, CNAs assist nursing teams and other medical staff with delivering quality healthcare services to those they care for. Certified nursing assistants are critical to the care and well-being of patients in the healthcare system. HeartCert Featured on Mission Matters Podcast

HeartCert Founder and CEO Tim Smith was recently interviewed on the Mission Matters podcast, discussing the origin of HeartCert and his passion for helping others – and teaching them to help others.

trained firefighter course and the HeartCert mission

The History of HeartCert

On the podcast, Tim recounts his personal journey, in which he went from a personal care attendant, to an EMT and firefighter, to a CPR instructor, and ultimately, to creating HeartCert. Tim’s career path helped him realize the lack of basic and advanced safety training that was available and accessible to the public. Because CPR is so vital to survival after cardiac arrest, the need was great – and the potential impact even bigger.

Register for a CPR Course

Since HeartCert was formed in 2010, the business has grown and changed to meet new challenges. During the COVID-19 pandemic, HeartCert quickly pivoted to offer online training modules and send CPR equipment by mail. This helped fill the growing need for healthcare providers and childcare workers.

Now, HeartCert operates training centers in four states, and offers virtual CPR training nationwide. HeartCert also operates its own online CPR supplies store and recently launched a virtual teaching assistant to help other instructors manage their operations.

The HeartCert Mission

Ultimately, there’s a simple mission behind HeartCert: helping people.

“I wanted to do something that I’m passionate about and that contributed to making the world a better place,” Tim said. “HeartCert offers quality, affordable and accessible life-saving training which prepares more individuals to act in case of an emergency. We’re building a base to teach people how to help others and better communities.”

Regardless of the facility in which a CNA works, their responsibilities are similar. CNAs are supervised by nursing staff members, such as registered nurses or licensed practical nurses.

Here are a few of the most common duties of certified nursing assistants:

Perform Daily Care

The most common and essential care that CNAs provide is providing assistance with everyday living tasks, such as cleaning and bathing, hygiene and toileting, transporting to and from activities, serving food and transferring between furniture and wheelchairs.

Measure Vital Signs

CNAs take vital signs such as temperature and blood pressure, which helps nursing staff monitor patient health.

Light Cleaning

As CNAs help patients with daily care, they will also straighten up the living space. Depending on the type of facility, CNAs may also be tasked with deeper cleaning of bathrooms and kitchens.

Provide Medical Care

Patients under the care of a certified nursing assistant will likely have a variety of health issues. CNAs will provide care as appropriate, and will also work to ensure that the patient’s physical limitations don’t create new issues, i.e. bed sores.

Listen to Patients

This is perhaps the most important task of a certified nursing assistant. CNAs tend to spend quite a bit of time with patients, and will get to know them well. By establishing this relationship, CNAs can identify potential issues and help patients get the care they need.

Certified nursing assistants are one of the most vital and versatile members of a care team, and they are also in high demand. Get your CNA career started with HeartCert CPR’s certified nursing assistant training course.

Why Office Workers Should be Trained in CPR

People spend a majority of their time at their workplace, so it’s very likely that they could have a heart attack at work. When this kind of incident occurs, will you be prepared to step in and help out? The best way to help out a co-worker who’s in cardiac arrest is to know how to perform CPR and why CPR is a great asset to have at the office.

Knowing CPR Can Save Lives

Thousands of people each year have cardiac arrest in the United States and often they have these heart problems where they spend the majority of their day – in the office.

What does CPR do to help? CPR helps with keeping the person’s blood circulating until an ambulance arrives. If someone in the office doesn’t know CPR, the person affected by cardiac arrest has a decreased chance of survival.

CPR is Different than Performing Mouth-to-Mouth Resuscitation

One of the main reasons that many people do not perform CPR to help fellow co-workers is because they are hesitant to give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to someone else in the office. If you don’t feel comfortable giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, doing hands-only CPR can be just as effective and is better than standing by and doing nothing.

You Can Become a Bigger Asset in Your Office

Knowing how to provide immediate support with CPR will not only save a life but will make you more valuable in the office environment. The people who take the time to learn CPR will be an asset to those who have heart attacks and knowing CPR can add a valuable skill to your resume.

Snow Shoveling Safety

Tips for Preventing a Cardiac Injury While Snow Shoveling

snow shovelingWinter has officially arrived in Minnesota, with snow storms the past two weekends forcing residents state-wide to pull out our shovels and fire up our snow blowers. Clearing our driveways and sidewalks is an added duty that we all have to tackle each winter and although it may be tiring and inconvenient, it can also be dangerous. A study conducted by US Nationwide Children’s Hospital found that every winter, almost 100 people in the United States die from cardiac-related injuries associated with snow shoveling.

Whether it is a few inches or a whole foot of snow, there are things to remember when going to clear it all out. Snow can be heavy and pushing it around with a shovel and throwing it onto your snow banks is exhausting, whether you have been doing other physical activity or not. Here are some tips for safely shoveling snow:

  • Do not shovel after eating or while smoking
  • Take it slow and stretch out before you begin
  • Shovel only fresh, powdery snow; it’s lighter
  • Push the snow rather than lifting it
  • If you do lift it, use a small shovel or only partially fill the shovel
  • Lift with your legs, not your back
  • Do not work to the point of exhaustion
  • Stay hydrated
  • Wear warm, breathable layers

If you are tackling a huge snowfall’s worth of snow, take frequent breaks, clearing your driveway in sections. If possible, get out and shovel while it is snowing to take it out layer by layer, before it gets too heavy or compacted.

If you are currently or have recently been facing lung or heart problems, consult a doctor first. At any feelings of tightness in the chest or dizziness, stop immediately. Always take your health into concern before worrying about shoveling your driveway. You are more important. If possible, shovel with someone else in your household or when a neighbor is shoveling as well so that you can monitor each other. If possible, keep your cell phone on your so that you can use it if need in an emergency.

Are you prepared to provide life-saving care in case of a snow-related cardiac emergency? HeartCert provides affordable, quality training to improve the quality of care and chance for survival in case of emergency.
